ADHD Family Support Group ...making sure we achieve the best of our potential
Barnardo’s - Train the Trainers.

The AD/HD Family Support Group, with the support of the NGO Committee within the ministry of Social Policy is organising this programme being referred to as “Train the Trainers” so that there would be more human resources available in helping persons suffering from ADHD, giving such services on a more personal basis and also if need be on an everyday level. Moreover we do believe that it is essential for parents to learn how to work with their children with AD/HD if the environment around the child is to be favourable and conducive to a positive outcome in the future. Parents, members and non-members in our group express a great desire to find help and learn those skills which cannot come from reading books alone. Through this training we are aiming to enhance the required skills so that such specialised service will become available in Malta.

The participants that will be accepted to attend such course (there will be a selection process through an individual interview) would need to be qualified professionals as it is desirable that parenting skills sessions are run by professionals. These participants must be qualified in one of the caring professions.

The “Train the Trainers” course will be run by two people –

- Ms Mary Connor has a degree in Law, is a qualified and registered Social Worker and has a recognised management qualification (NVQ5). Ms Connor has been involved with the programme being presented for funding since its development. She has delivered a number of programmes to parents and worked with children and young people with AD/HD for more than 10 years.

- Ms Carol Reed has a degree in psychology, is a qualified and registered social worker and has a post qualifying child care award. She has been involved in delivering the proposed programme to parents for four years and has worked with children and young people over 15 years of age and their families.

The “Train the Trainers” course to be delivered will be of the duration of two full days. The course will be based on going through each of the sessions of the parenting skills courses that the trained people would be expected to deliver. This parenting skills course is named “The Parent Factor in ADHD”. Attached to the application one can find the sessions and content of the parenting skills programme. The participants will be expected to undertake practical exercises during the two day “Train the Trainer” course in order to be able to start experiencing and understand the impact they would have on parents when actually giving the parenting skills courses. At the end of the two days the participants should be competent to run such parenting skills courses (The Parent factor in ADHD).

Cost of Attendance
Being supported by the NGO Committee the cost that has to be borne by participants is the Course Fee levied by Barnardo’s for every participant to the course. The fee being requested is Sterling 500.00 per participant.

Conclusion
As a group we strongly believe that such services of parenting skills courses are a solid requirement towards achieving a better understanding and adaptation for families having children diagnosed with ADHD. We are organising this project as we believe that such Parenting Skills Course will enhance the skills of parents dealing and adapting to their children having ADHD and the siblings of children with ADHD.

Those wishing to apply to be considered for participation in such course should send an application together with their Curriculum Vitae through e-mail on info@adhdmalta.org or by post at P.O. Box 2, St Julians STJ 1001. After an interview and upon acceptance to participate a deposit of euro 150.00 is required. The rest of the fee will have to be effected prior to the commencement of the course. Non attendance would mean the forfeiture of the deposit.
